What is Cafe Voca?
Cafe Voca serves as an invaluable platform for individuals with special needs to develop both social and vocational skills in a supportive and nurturing environment. Through hands-on training and real-world experience, participants have the opportunity to cultivate essential skills such as effective communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management. Moreover, the cafe fosters an inclusive atmosphere that encourages individuals to interact with customers and peers, further enhancing their social skills and self-confidence. As they navigate various tasks within the cafe, from brewing coffee to serving customers, participants gain invaluable work experience that prepares them for future employment opportunities. Cafe Voca not only equips individuals with the practical skills needed for success in the workforce but also instills a sense of pride and accomplishment in their abilities, empowering them to lead fulfilling lives.
A Community Partnership
The North Suburban YMCA (NSYMCA) and the Chicagoland Korean Rotary Club of Northbrook developed this strategic initiative, funded by a grant from Rotary International to provide job training and support for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Café Voca recruits and trains individuals with intellectual and development disabilities (often referred to as special needs) between the ages of 16-25.
This will provide education and hands-on work experience and opportunities throughout the Café for a well-rounded job training experience hopefully leading to continued employment.
