HELP SAVE YOUR CHILD'S LIFE

Keeping children safe is the most important job as a parent and the North Suburban YMCA is making it possible to give all 2nd graders swim safety.

The North Suburban YMCA has partnered with schools in our community to start a swim safety program to every 2nd grader!

Two seconds can be all it takes for someone to drown.

  • Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity.
  • The North Suburban YMCA is dedicated to making sure every child learns the essential water safety skills, which will make them more confident and safe around water.
  • Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of death for children ages 5-14.
  • 60% of children who drown are within 10 feet of safety.

Two seconds can be all it takes for someone to drown. Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity. The North Suburban YMCA is dedicated to making sure every child learns the essential water safety skills, which will make them more confident and safe around water.

According to statistics, drowning is the 2nd leading cause of death for children ages 5-14. Furthermore, 60% of children who drown are within 10 feet of safety. These statistics are not only alarming, but they show that we need to put a large focus on teaching children how to water safe. The NSYMCA is taking a stand to help change these statistics in our community and save our youth through the creation of this safety around water Initiative. Therefore, it is our goal to ensure that all children have the knowledge and skills needed to reduce the risk of drowning by the time they leave 2nd grade.

The North Suburban YMCA is dedicated to supporting the community in Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social esponsibility, and this new safety around water initiative does all three. The NSYMCA is offering a program that offers FREE water safety & swim lessons to all 2nd graders that qualify which will make sure that our children are safe and confident in the water. In addition to helping youth feel safe around water, swim activities help develop kids’ problem solving abilities and bolster their self-esteem.
  • WHY 2ND GRADERS?

2 Seconds 2 Long Children posing at the side of the pool

We have identified 2nd graders as a key age group because they are starting to become more independent in and around water. At the Y, 7 years old is the youngest age that swimmers can be in the pool by themselves given they pass a swim proficiency test. Their motor skills and strength start to develop beyond the basics that have been covered throughout kindergarten and 1st grade. In addition, they are starting to develop concrete problem-solving skills. If a child falls into deep water, he/she needs to be able to determine the problem and then remember the order of tasks that will solve the current challenge. At earlier ages, while children can learn specific skills, it may be hard for them to understand the logic behind when and how to apply those skills.

  • THE PROGRAM

All 2nd grade students would receive information about the program in English & Spanish. The NSYMCA will assess 2nd grade children on two consecutive Sundays to see if they are candidates for the program. We will provide free transportation for families who need it as well as a translator for non-English speaking families.

The Y will assess the students based on their safety around water

    • Students who pass will receive a participation certificate, gift and a free pass to come to family swim at the YMCA.
    • Students who don’t pass the assessment will be invited to participate in our 2 Seconds 2 Long program.
      • The program will run for 8 weeks (including the assessments) on Sunday evenings.
      • The participants will be given a free Y membership during those weeks to practice their swim skills.
      • During the classes, children will be taught how to be safety conscious around water, when to yell for help and how to paddle, tread and float. We will teach them how to be safe around water and basic swim techniques.
      • At the end of the 8 weeks there will be a post assessment, participation certificate, gift and a free pass to come to family swim at the YMCA.
    • We will offer dinner to the families if possible.

The YMCA is “America’s Swim Instructor” and the most accessible community resource to help prevent drowning and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming. The YMCA introduced the concept of water safety and group swim lessons more than 100 years ago and each year, the Y teaches children invaluable water safety and swimming skills. The North Suburban YMCA has remained committed to those values and will continue to be “America’s Swim Instructor”.

The North Suburban YMCA provides individuals in Northbrook and the surrounding areas with programs and tools that help them become healthier, more connected, and confident. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our community and each other. Every day we work side by side with our neighbors throughout 15 surrounding communities to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income, or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. We focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. The NSYMCA is a charitable organization, inclusive and welcoming to all in our community. Learn more at NSYMCA.org.
